Joseph Mallord William Turner The Foliage of a Group of Trees 1799

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 41 Verso:
The Foliage of a Group of Trees 1799
D01980
Turner Bequest XLV 41a
Pencil on white wove paper, 225 x 329 mm
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram at centre

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Made with the page turned horizontally, this rather tight, conventionally handled study is stylistically uncharacteristic of Turner’s drawing at the time he was using this sketchbook, and it forms a complete contrast to the four loose sketches on the preceding leaves (versos of folios 37–40; D01972, D01974, D01976, D01978). It may be by a hand other than Turner’s, perhaps that of a member of the household of one of his hosts – Whitaker at The Holme (see folios 14 verso–15 recto; D01928–D01929), Parker at Browsholme (see folio 28 recto; D01954) or Townley at Towneley Hall (see folio 46 recto; D01985; Turner Bequest XLV 45).
