The inscription is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. See folio 41 opposite and folio 6 recto (D03777, D03741) for details of transactions between Turner and the colourman James Newman; thi inscription appears to be in the hand of his assistant ?J. Brown, who signed the notes on D03741.
