Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the drawing is continued on folio 84 recto opposite (D02747). This is the most elaborately worked up of the studies in this sketchbook, making use of a subtle orchestration of colour and scraped highlights on the mauve-pink ground common to most of its pages. It is the first of the long sequence of sketches on the Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Whitby running on to folio 98 verso (D02746–D02776).
