The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry for page ‘38a. Ben Lomond’1 would normally imply the verso of folio 38, another Ben Lomond watercolour bound opposite this one (D41243, the verso of D41242, which Finberg numbered LVI 38).2 However, in this case he initially appears to have intended the ‘a’ suffix to signify an addendum number for the present work, which had been extracted for display. In a memorandum dated 14 January 1914, he noted: ‘sketch on back of p.38 should really be 38a, & what is printed as 38a, i.e. Ben Lomond, should be 38d’.3
