Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 119 Verso:
The Banks of the Tilt at Blair Atholl 1801
D03143
Turner Bequest LVI 117a
Pencil on white wove paper, 114 x 184 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the pages turned horizontally, the subject is continued on folio 120 recto opposite (D03144; Turner Bequest LVI 118). It is one of a series of studies on the banks of the Rivers Garry and Tilt at Blair Atholl; see under folio 118 verso (D03141; Turner Bequest LVI 116a).
Turner scholar C.F. Bell considered this the principal source for the 1811 Liber Studiorum engraving Near Blair Athol Scotland (see the watercolour design, Tate D08134; Turner Bequest CXVII G; and Tate impressions A00970–A00971),1 but there seems to be no strong evidence for this.
