The subject is continued on folio 174 recto opposite (D03250; Turner Bequest LVI 172). Auchincass or Auchen Castle, two miles south west of Moffat, is supposed to have been built by Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl of Moray (died 1332) who was Regent of Scotland 1329–1331. In his inscription on the other page, Turner may have confused him with the better-known ‘Regent Murray’, James Stewart (?1531–1570). However, Turner’s drawing does not show the ruins of Auchincass, but apparently those of Lochhouse, a small sixteenth-century tower house on the road leading south out of Moffat. Lochhouse is now fully restored.
