In its tentative incompleteness this suggestion of the shifting visibility of the view from a mountain–top anticipates some of Turner’s late oil studies, such as the so–called ‘Val d’Aosta’, now known as Falls of Schaffhausen (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne).1
