Made with the page turned horizontally, this sketch may have been made in relation to the same projected work as those on folios 59 verso and 60 recto (D02088–D02089). The pair of seated or crouching women on the left do not have any clear relationship with the more distant group of soldiers with spears and shields to the right. However, it is likely that the drawings are connected with one or another of Turner’s large-scale projects of this time, whether in oil or in watercolour.
