Here Turner studies the lighthouse at Orfordness on the Suffolk coast. Constructed in the 1790s, the lighthouse stands on a long shingle spit which spans from Orford to Aldeburgh where it links to the mainland. These sketches are preparatory material for the finished watercolour and gouache drawing on blue paper of Orfordness produced in around 1827 for the East Coast series (The Whitworth Art Gallery).1 See also Tate D18304–D18305; Turner Bequest CCIX 86a–87.
