This series of sketches depicts the Suffolk coast, near the villages of Pakefield (inscribed ‘Bakefield’) and Kirkley (‘Kirkly’). These communities are now part of Lowestoft. The tower of the Church of All Saints and St Margaret at Pakefield is presumably rendered at rear, given its proximity to the sea. Kirkley’s St Peter and St John Church may be depicted at top right, just below Turner’s inscription. See also Tate D18247–D18248; Turner Bequest CCIX 46a–47.
