This carefully rendered prospect of Brighton appears to have been taken from the east of the city. The view encompasses the Regency townhouses lining Marine Parade and St Nicholas’ Church which can be seen atop the hill in the distance. Turner scholar Eric Shanes has associated this sketch with Brighthelmston, Sussex, a watercolour engraved for the Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England print series in 1825 (see Tate impression T04421).
