This is a study of Kirkstall Abbey in West Yorkshire taken from an easterly perspective, with a separate, faintly rendered jotting of the Abbey from a distance at bottom right. Turner produced a highly detailed finished drawing of Kirkstall Abbey’s tower from the east in the North of England sketchbook of 1797 (Tate D00920; Turner Bequest XXXIV 14).
These sketches are associated with Turner’s watercolour of Kirkstall Abbey produced for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England series (Tate D18146; Turner Bequest CCVIII M and Tate impressions T04810, T04811, T06371).1 See also Tate D18390; Turner Bequest CCX 48.
