These cursory and swiftly rendered jottings show a church tower and a landscape with low-lying hills. The church may be St Bartholomew’s at Armley, near Kirkstall Abbey (see Tate D18395, D18400; Turner Bequest CCX 51, 53a). Given that St Bartholomew’s was remodeled in 1825 and 1872, it stands today in a markedly altered form to that possibly pictured in this sketch.1
Turner has also inscribed the following calculation, possibly a calculation of expenditure, at top left:
