Here Turner has rendered a series of cursory sky studies, most likely taken as he explored the River Arun and the coast near Arundel in West Sussex. The English Channel and the coastal town of Littlehampton can be seen from Arundel Castle (see Tate D18419; Turner Bequest CCX 63). The sky studies are annotated with various colour notes: ‘yellow’, ‘Blue’, ‘[?Warm Red]’, ‘W[hite]’; Turner has also inscribed ‘Black Horse’ in the uppermost view where the animal grazes by the river at right.
The sketches have been produced with the book turned upside down.
