Subjects one and two refer to the watercolours Brighthelmstone and Portsmouth engraved by George Cooke and William Miller respectively for the Picturesque Views of the Southern Coast of England series, published between 1814 and 1826 (see Tate impressions T05288–T05295, T05303–T05304, T05994). Brighthelmstone (i.e. Brighton) and Portsmouth were published in 1825.1 Subjects three (‘Portsmouth’), four (‘Arundel’),‘Kirkstall’ and ‘Knaresboro’ are related to W.B. Cooke’s Rivers and Ports of England series, to which the engravers G.M. Phillips, Thomas Goff ‘Lupton’, William Say, and J. Bromley contributed (see Tate impressions T04810–T04811, T04815, T04816, T04834). A design for ‘Shoreham’ may have been developed for the Ports of England or Southern Coast series, according to Turner scholars Eric Shanes and Andrew Wilton.2 The watercolour of Shoreham is now housed at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery and was never engraved or published in connection with a particular series. Subjects five (‘Arundel’), six (‘Wharefdale’), and ‘Knaresborough’ appear to be connected with publisher Charles Heath’s project: Picturesque Views in England and Wales, a major series of one hundred views produced for engraving between late 1824 and early 1836 (see Tate impressions T04510, T04536–T04537, T0462, T06109).3 Number five, Arundel Castle and Town, Sussex, was published in 1834, while the Wharfedale subject (Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire) was released in 1827, followed a year later by Knaresborough in 1828.
