The view is south-east down the path beside the lawn on the terrace at East Cowes Castle, leading to the detached tower at the end with the open arch of the ‘garden room’ at its foot; for the latter see Tate D20807 and D20813 (Turner Bequest CCXXVII a 4, 10) in particular. The bulk of the main house is out of sight behind the arcaded south-western façade of the smaller of its two conservatories, which is seen from further off in numerous views which feature the steep steps leading down from it (at the bottom right here), for example D20830 (CCXXVII a 27). See also the view from the top of the steps in D20839 (CCXXVII a 36).
This is among dozens of blue paper studies made in and around East Cowes Castle, presumably in the course of a single visit. For more on the various aspects of the house (demolished in about 1950), and its lost grounds as depicted by Turner, see the Introduction to this subsection.
