This is among dozens of blue paper studies made in and around East Cowes Castle, presumably during the same visit. For more on the various aspects of the house (demolished in about 1950), and its lost grounds as depicted by Turner, see the Introduction to this subsection. There are a few drawings identified as East Cowes interiors (see also Tate D20851, D22690, D22694, D22705, D22761; CCXXVII a 48, CCXLIV 28, 32, 43, 99).
This study focuses on seated male and female figures, with rather slight indications of the architectural features of the room, but it appears to be a variation on another ink drawing, D20851, where the setting has been identified as the library; see also the colour studies D24864 and D22705, which also include numerous figures in that room.
Verso:
Blank; inscribed in pencil ‘Box 97’ bottom right.
