The drawing is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. Two boats are shown manoeuvring under sail, perhaps during a race, with the horizon perfunctorily indicated. This is one of many such coastal and nautical studies in this sketchbook, presumably relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, as discussed in the Introduction.
