At the top, the main drawing shows the waterfront of a boatyard with hulls on the stocks at the left and possibly the outline of a larger vessel beyond low buildings; the masts and sailing boats at the right appear to be part of the same scene. One mast is shown diagonally, and the study of a large boat heeled over or careened at the bottom centre with figures gathered around it is probably a development of this detail. Compare the scene on folio 15 verso (D20618; Turner Bequest CCXXVI 14a).
At the bottom right, inverted relative to the other sketches, is a study of a small yacht under sail. These are among many such coastal and nautical studies in this sketchbook, presumably relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, as discussed in the Introduction.
