Yachts under Sail 1827
D20717
Turner Bequest CCXXVI 74
Pencil on white wove paper, 192 x 112 mm
Partial watermark ‘R Bar | 18’

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The two drawings were made with the page turned vertically. The upper shows yachts sailing at speed in choppy waters, probably racing in the Solent; the lower scene is crowded but more sedate, and may be a harbour scene at Cowes. For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, see the Introduction.
