Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, Cowes Castle is seen to the north-west beyond the masts of boats on the River Medina; for other views of the castle, see under folio 19 verso (D18025). Turner had made a detailed watercolour from this direction in about 1796 (Tate D00667; Turner Bequest XXVII F).
