Like the studies on folio 60 verso opposite (D18106), these five low coastal profiles show views around Calshot Castle, at the entrance to Southampton Water. In the second, the church spires of Southampton are shown, some six miles to the north-west. The two similar views at the bottom show the castle from the north, looking across the water. Compare the undated drawing by the marine painter Nicholas Pocock (1741–1821) showing Calshott [sic] Castle with the Isle of Wight from the Northward (Tate T09379).
This is one of a sequence of pages showing the Southampton area; see under folio 58 verso (D18102).
