Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the two spires of Southampton are seen to the north-west towards sunset, with the sun low over Southampton Water, where it is reflected. The viewpoint, seen in the other half of this view on folio 65 verso opposite (D18116), is on the eastern shore, in the vicinity of where Weston Parade now runs. Adjacent views show the sun low and its rays just after setting (see the verso and folio 64 recto respectively; D18118, D18113). This is one of a sequence of views in the Southampton area; see under folio 58 verso (D18102).
