Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, there are two main subjects here. At the top Southampton is seen to the north-west beyond a beached sailing boat, with its characteristic two church spires shown on folio 68 recto opposite (D18121) where the view continues. Below is another double-page sketch, with a man and woman on a shore with a building beyond, presumably on the eastern bank of Southampton Water, as for sketches on previous pages. This is one of a sequence of views in the Southampton area; see under folio 58 verso (D18102).
