There are separate studies of various yachts here; with the page turned vertically, near the gutter Turner has drawn the profile of a hull and labelled it (the other way up) ‘Miranda’. Belonging to James Maxse, the vessel was a celebrated one, and performed exceptionally in regatta events at Cowes in 1827, winning the hundred guinea cup on 31 July and the Royal Yacht Club1 gold cup, presented by King George IV, on 13 August. See the entry for Turner’s notes of some of the races and the boats involved in the Windsor and Cowes, Isle of Wight sketchbook (Tate D20730; Turner Bequest CCXXVI 80a). For more on studies in the present sketchbook relating to the regatta, see the sketchbook Introduction.
