Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, at the top left is part of a drawing of Richborough Castle near Sandwich which continues across folio 40 recto opposite (D35827; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 39), where the Roman ruins are seen. In this part the view is down the last meanderings of the River Stour towards Pegwell Bay, with Ramsgate on the Kent coast in the distance to the north-east; see under folio 6 verso (D35768).
With the page turned vertically, there is a quick study of a boat under sail, presumably along the river or off the nearby coast.
