With the page turned vertically, there are studies of boats with a tower beyond, as well as studies of a separate group and a hull above. Turner’s note, apparently ‘Lion’, may record the name of one of the craft. They were likely observed on the River Stour near Sandwich, like those on the recto (D35829); there are views of the town on folio 40 verso opposite (D35828; Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 39a) and other adjacent pages. Technical notes:
As Finberg noted, this leaf is ‘partly torn’ away1 for reasons unknown, leaving less than half of it; its height is thus only 43 mm rather than what would originally have been 98 mm.
