In the upper half is a view of a bay framed by cliffs to the left and a building, possibly on a quay or pier to the right, with a small boat at the centre; compare the sketch on folio 18 recto (D35520). Above the main view appears to be a separate outline of distant cliffs. Below, inverted, is a rougher sketch of what appears to be a coastal view. Both sketches appear to have counterparts on folio 16 verso opposite (D35517). See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views scattered through it.
Technical notes:
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
