With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with drawings of the buildings of Amboise. The imposing stone castle is featured at the centre of the page. Turner subsequently used the drawings of the town in this volume as the basis for ideas for engraved reproduction, culminating in two printed illustrations for Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France);1 see Tate impressions T04683, T04684.
