With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the upper half of this page with studies of hilly terrain with buildings. Tate curator Ian Warrell has located these scenes to the western environs of Paris.1 A cloud study with colour noted has also been included in the bottom right-hand corner of the page.
