Turner filled much of this page with studies of a densely packed cityscape with a wharf and distant spires. Tate curator Ian Warrell located these scenes to the town of Caen in Normandy.1 The artist filled several pages of the present volume with studies of Caen, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction.
