This colour study of the tower-like rocky outcrop near Épiré, known as La Pierre Bécherelle, was worked up by Turner from his 1826 tour of the River Loire. It is based on pencil drawings in the Nantes, Angers and Saumur sketchbook; see the drawing second from the bottom on D23195 (Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 23a) and the top drawing on D23196 (Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 24).1
