This tonally dramatic colour study of the interior of a cave stocked with barrels of wine is derived from material Turner gathered near Saumur on his 1826 tour of the Loire Valley. See entry for Tate D23240 (Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 46) in the Nantes, Angers and Saumur sketchbook, and Tate D40128 for less developed pencil sketches of the cave dwellings of Northern France.1
