This sketch depicts the Tour de Haute Chaine, part of the medieval defences of Angers, as seen from the right bank of the River Maine. It is one of several pencil sketches on blue paper which Turner made of this city on the 1826 tour of Northern France.1 See the Introduction to this section for a list of these works.

Technical Notes:
The sheet was formerly attached along one edge to Tate D24920 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 84).1 It belongs to a batch of blue paper fibres used by Turner made by George Steart of Bally, Ellen and Steart at De Montault Mill, Coombe Down, Bath. 2
