This colour beginning of the prominence beside the River Loire upon which sits the Château de Clermont is worked onto a sheet of paper with an 1829 watermark. However it closely related to an earlier colour study on blue paper in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford1 and is based upon pencil sketches in the Nantes, Angers and Saumur sketchbook (Tate D23170; Turner Bequest CCXLVIII 10a) which he collected on his 1826 tour of Northern France.
