The drawing continues across folio 18 recto opposite (D14521). Finberg subsequently annotated his 1909 Inventory entry (‘On the Giudecca, looking towards the Salute’): ‘Sal. Dogana. D’s Pal & Camp. S Giorgio from nr Zittella [sic]’.1 The Turner scholar C.F. Bell crossed out ‘looking towards the Salute’ in another copy and wrote: ‘Salute to l. S. Giorgio to r | Doge’s Palce [?& c] in centre’.2 Bell marked Finberg’s similar text in In Venice with Turner (1930): ‘The Salute on the left, the Ducal Pal in centre, S. Giorgio on right’.3
The viewpoint is along the north side of the Isola della Giudecca, either on the Fondamenta delle Zitelle or in a boat not far out in the Canale, looking due north to the porch of the Dogana on the present page, with the domes and towers of Santa Maria della Salute to the north-north-west on the left above the Seminario Patriarcale. To the left of the Dogana’s porch is the campanile of San Moisè, and to its right the lightly indicated Bacino waterfront on the far side of the entrance to the Grand Canal. The panorama continues as far as the church of San Giorgio Maggiore on the opposite page.
Compare the less detailed panorama from the Canale della Giudecca on folios 16 verso–17 recto (D14518–D14519). For other drawings made in the vicinity, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
