Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the view appears to be from outside the west front of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, with a slight indication of one of its pavilions at the left of the upper register (compare folio 34 verso; D14549; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 30a), looking south to the Apennine mountains. The second band of distant peaks may be a continuation to the right; compare the view on folio 39 verso (D14559; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 35a)..
