The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Lake (or river) among mountains. (Probably view of the Apennines from San Luca)’, crossing out ‘Probably’.1 The drawing, looking south to the Apennines from the vicinity of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca south-west of Bologna, continues across folio 39 verso opposite (D14559; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 35a); that half appears to correspond to the lower register of a two-part drawing in that direction on folio 35 verso (D14551; CLXXVI 31a).
For the Sanctuary itself, under folio 42 recto (D14564; CLXXVI 38);2 and for Bologna in general and numerous views on adjacent pages, under folio 24 recto (D14532).
