The drawing continues across folio 73 recto opposite (D14621; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 69). The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Town and harbour of Ancona’): ‘from South of the Lazzaretto’.1
The viewpoint is what is now port area south-west of the Lazzaretto (the low complex on the right in the middle distance), which has seen much subsequent development. To the north on the left here is the former lighthouse, only the base of which now survives on the far side of the harbour, while high on the right to the north-north-east is the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, with the dome of the church of Santi Pellegrino e Teresa below at the gutter. The Baroque Porta Pia is beyond the Lazzaretto on the right in the middle distance.
