The drawing continues across folio 72 verso opposite (D14620; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 68a). The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Town and harbour of Ancona’): ‘from South of the Lazzaretto’.1
The viewpoint is what is now the port area south-west of the Lazzaretto (largely seen on the other page in the middle distance), which has been much redeveloped. On the right here, high to the east, is the Cittadella; the slopes and fortifications are now heavily wooded. There are later arcaded buildings along what is now the Via Gugliemo Marconi in about the same position as those Turner shows on the right. Towards the top left is a separate detail to clarify part of the main drawing below it.
For Cecilia Powell and James Hamilton’s comments on Turner’s varied and extensive coverage of Ancona, which takes up most of the last quarter or so of this sketchbook, see under folio 69 verso (D14514; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 65a).2
