The drawing continues across folio 74 recto opposite (D14623; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 70). The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Town and harbour of Ancona’): ‘from the jetty outside the Canale del Lazzaretto’.1 The viewpoint is what is now the shore of the port area north-west of the Lazzaretto (on the other page), which has seen much subsequent development, the jetty or pier Bell mentions, seen on old maps, is apparently in the foreground here. High on the right to the north-north-east is the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, with the dome of the church of Santi Pellegrino e Teresa below near the centre.
For Cecilia Powell and James Hamilton’s comments on Turner’s varied and extensive coverage of Ancona, which takes up most of the last quarter or so of this sketchbook, see under folio 69 verso (D14514; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 65a).2
