Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851

Turner Bequest CLXXVI 70a

The drawing is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Town and harbour of Ancona’): ‘The Lazzaretto in right foreground’.1 With the Baroque Porta Pia beyond on the right, this is a loose reprise or variation of the views from slightly different angles on folios 72 verso–73 recto and 73 recto–74 verso (D14620–D14623; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 68a–69, 69a–70). On the left to the north-north-west here is the former lighthouse, only the base of which now survives on the far side of the harbour, and high at the centre to the north-north-east is outline of the Cathedral of San Ciriaco.
For Cecilia Powell and James Hamilton’s comments on Turner’s varied and extensive coverage of Ancona, which takes up most of the last quarter or so of this sketchbook, see under folio 69 verso (D14514; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 65a).2
