The drawing continues across folio 75 verso opposite (D14626; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 71a). The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Town of Ancona’): ‘from the Banchina the Citadel to r.’1 The viewpoint is on the shore of the harbour south-west of the cathedral, along the Banchina on what is now the Lungomare Luigi Vanvitelli, and the prospect on this page is south to the Cittadella; the slopes and the fortress itself are now heavily wooded.
For Cecilia Powell and James Hamilton’s comments on Turner’s varied and extensive coverage of Ancona, which takes up most of the last quarter or so of this sketchbook, see under folio 69 verso (D14514; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 65a).2
