Inscribed by John Ruskin in blue ink ‘80’ bottom left, upside down and ‘300’ top left, upside down
Stamped in black ‘CLXXV 80’ top left, upside down
 
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg subsequently annotated his 1909 Inventory entry (‘Various sketches of gondolas, figures, &c.’): ‘“[?Dirt]. Boat” [“]Dogana Boat”, Black Some yellow. Some Red Brass”’.1 These studies of boats, boatmen and their costumes fall between views on the Grand Canal around the Rialto Bridge, themselves crammed with boats of all sorts, although Turner also mentions the Dogana (see in particular folio 40 recto; D14389) in his annotations.
