Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this is a brief continuation of the full-page view of the
Fondaco dei Turchi south-east across the Grand Canal on folio 89 verso opposite (D14484; Turner Bequest CLXXV 88a). The waterside arcade lightly indicated in the foreground here belongs to the Palazzo Gritti. For other drawings made in the vicinity and an overview of Turner’s coverage of Venice, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
Turned vertically, the rest of the page is taken up by a loose drawing of a robed, gesturing figure among trees. This appears to be a copy of an as yet undetermined painting; see under folio 40 verso (D14390) for Turner’s studies of artworks in Venice.
