This cursory and swiftly rendered sketch depicts the site of the Battle of Kulm, which took place near Kulm, Nollendorf and Teplitz in northern Bohemia between 29 and 30 August 1813. The Battle was part of the War of the Sixth Coalition, fought between Napoleon’s armies and a coalition comprised of Russian, Prussian and Austrian forces.
Turner passed the site as he journeyed from Dresden in Saxony to Teplitz; see also Tate D30367–D30368, D30370; Turner Bequest CCCI 37a–38, 39.
