These are views of the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland, rendered inversely to one another. One shows the Elbe meandering around the base of two rock formations: the Lilienstein at left and the Königstein at right. Atop the latter of these plateaux is the Festung Königstein, which is depicted in the other sketch. Turner shows the fortress’ north side. It is shown again on Tate D30931–D30947, D30949; Turner Bequest CCCVI 24a–32a, 33a.
