Here Turner shows the Elbe valley in Saxony, looking towards Lilienstein, Pfaffenstein andKönigstein Mountains. The artist drew this prospect on the Bastei rocks, close to a viewing platform seen through the trees at centre left. See also Tate D30981–D31001; Turner Bequest CCCVI 49a–59a.
