The principal drawing was taken in the German city of Frankfurt and shows the cathedral from a vantage point on the Domplatz. Turner has continued the cathedral tower on Tate D30679; Turner Bequest CCCIV 26a. At the top of the page Turner has also rendered a slight sketch of Düsseldorf, orientated inversely to the view of Frankfurt. The artist passed through Düsseldorf on his way back to England via the Rhine.
