This is a study of Römerberg Square in Frankfurt, Germany. The Römerberg is Frankfurt’s historic heart and the site of the city hall (the Römer) and ancient church of St Nicholas (inscribed ‘St Niccoli’), depicted at right. Turner has recorded some of the church’s architectural features – parts of its carved exterior and decorative window mouldings – in small sketches above the view. Beyond the Nikolaikirche can be seen the tower of Frankfurt Cathedral.
